Encouraging young people to live life to the full

Date:11 July, 2011

By SHKP Vice Chairman & Managing Director Raymond Kwok

I was delighted to meet the eight winners of our latest Young Writers’ Debut competition today.  This was the third time that we and Joint Publishing have held one of these competitions to help young writers realize their dreams, and they have been very popular.

Glancing through the winning books, I was impressed by their creativity.  They include novels, sketches, poetry and short stories, and they put different perspectives on life in Hong Kong, local culture, survival against the odds and more.

Good mentors are important for young people’s development.  The creative professionals and literary veterans who judged the competition also put time and effort into coaching the young writers.  I hope the winners will follow their example and help develop other young writers in the future.

I have also met winners of previous competitions and some of them have published second or even third books.  We have set up a Young Writer Alumni Association so that past winners can discuss writing and creativity.

I believe that continuous learning can broaden a person’s horizons, and I encourage these new competition winners and other young people to live their lives to the fullest by pursuing knowledge, seizing opportunity and fulfilling their potential and aspirations.
